Our Music explorer’s course opens up the world of music to children and their caregivers through developmentally appropriate activities such as games, hand signs, listening, instrument exploration, movement and lots of singing.

The course is influenced by the concepts developed by Zoltan Kodaly and children will learn fundamental music concepts such as beat, rhythm, pitch and notation.

Children will be introduced to a host of instruments some through physically playing and others through listening to live instruments and recordings of a wide variety of music (classical, jazz, World, traditional). The process of developing a child musically also enhances their social and emotional development as different ideas, feelings, the need to share and respect for others is all part of the musical journey.

Importantly children learn to listen with attention which will serve them well in all forums of education. Each class is carefully planned and structured to ensure that children are prepared for the longer musical journey involving instrument classes. When children are used to using their singing voice and

have a developed ear and a knowledge of rhythm, notation and pitch it makes the transition to instrument playing natural, happy and fun!

FIDELMA SHERIDAN -

Fidelma is from Galway. She received training on a number of instruments including the Piano, Clarinet and Guitar. After many years studying Physics and then working as an engineer in Seagate Technology, Celestica and Boston Scientific she has found her way back to music and is happily and successfully tutoring young children in pre-instrumental music classes. Fidelma is particularly interested in the use of all the senses in opening the world of music up to children in an intuitive and developmentally appropriate manner and her classes are full of movement, games, tales and lots of singing! She firmly believes that music can be used as a forum for development of the whole child and that it can offer great joy, release and depth to an individual’s entire life while enhancing their cognitive, communication, social and emotional skills.

Fidelma has sung in many choirs performing a wide variety of music including madrigals, large choral works, jazz, traditional and world music. She played Clarinet with the Britannia Brass and Reed Band while living in Derry. She has taken exams to Grade 7 and 8 in Piano and Clarinet respectively. She has successfully completed training with the Kodaly Society of Ireland in ‘Active music Making – The Kodaly Approach’ and is a licensed ‘Kindermusik’ educator.

Fidelma is founder of C-Sidesound through which she delivers music workshops, yoga classes, summer camps and Kindermusik classes to children in Galway.
