What age should my child begin studying music? 

​

A number of programs aimed at young children have developed in recent years and studies show that exposure to music early in life helps children develop social skills and build confidence. It also helps make neural connections in the brain to develop memory and foster creativity! Children enjoy learning with friends and can benefit from each others’ progress.

 

Why study at Galway Music Academy rather than a private teacher at home?

​

In a school environment students have access to a variety of highly qualified teaching staff and exposure to students at all levels in many instruments. Students have the opportunity to attend perform with other students in a stimulating, supportive and collaborative environment. We can schedule two or more family members at the same time to make lessons more convenient. By having lessons at our school, there are no distractions (text messages, ringing phones, Facebook or sibling interruptions) so we can provide 100% individual attention to our students.

 

Do I or my child need to some music skills or be gifted in music?

​

No. We believe that any exposure to music can positively impact your child’s development in other areas of life as well.

Enjoyment and having fun while learning music is first and foremost – we emphasize the process!

 

Do you supply instruments? 

​

Yes. We sell excellent beginners and intermediate Acoustic and Electric Guitar packages , Acoustic and Electric Drumkits and accessories like drum sticks, guitar straps, tuners and plectrums. We set them up ready to play right here and ensure that the instrument is right for you before you purchase. There are a number of  excellent music shops in Galway City and beyond. We recommend Opus 2 in High Street for Pianos, Keyboards and sheet music, Powell's in shop Street for Traditional instruments and sheet music, Kieran Moloney's in High Street for Trad and Acoustic Instruments and IT Music in Galway for Rock and Pop Instruments- in any case, pleasesupport local businesses wherever possible! 

 

Are Grades compulsory?

No. We encourage students to think about and attempt grades but there is no pressure to undertake grades, it's totally up to you.

 

Where do I begin?

​

What is the teaching schedule?

​

Generally speaking Galway Music Academy follows the Irish National Schools calendar, however we operate year-round with open enrollment so you can start anytime.

 

What teaching methods are used? How do you choose your teachers?

​

All of our teachers have vast experience in teaching and/or instrument specific university degrees. After an interview process and Garda background/reference checks, we only hire those teachers who are caring, nurturing, and imaginative educators passionate about their teaching.

Each instructor is guided by a broad and flexible curriculum using a diverse set of approaches tailored for each individual student.

What styles of music can I learn?

​

We offer instruction in a variety of styles and genres, including Rock/Pop, Classical, Jazz, Irish Traditional, and Latin Percussion. If you don't see something you would like to learn, we will work with you to meet your interest.

 

I am an adult – can I take lessons at your school?

​

Yes! Our adult program is designed to help adults start any instrument. Emphasis is placed on music for recreation and opportunities to perform or learn in a group setting as well. Did you know that music has many health benefits too? We provide lesson times on Saturdays and evenings to accommodate your busy schedule.
